The software tool USFOS is developed by SINTEF marintek and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) through Joint Industry Projects sponsored by oil companies and engineering consultants.

SINTEF is the largest R&D organization in Scandinavia, with more than 1800 employees working various aspects of technology and human sciences.

The company USFOS A/S has been formed as a spin-off from the R&D institutions, to continue support to existing and new users when the research and development phase of the program is completed. Usfos AS was established in 2003.

The USFOS programme was developed by a core team consisting of prof. Jørgen Amdahl, dr. Tore Holmås, dr. Øyvind Hellan and dr. Ernst Eberg. Some of these are the owners of the USFOS company.

World wide marketing and sales are done by DNVGL Software, part of Det norske Veritas GL , one of the major ship classification societies with 400 offices and 16,000 employees worldwide.

Continued development of the USFOS program is done in close cooperation with Ceetron, another SINTEF spin-off specializing in computer graphics and visualization of engineering data.

Advanced integrated solutions within Structural Fire Design is provided in close cooperation with the specialist company ComputIT, responsible for the computational fluid dynamics code Kameleon FireEx , (numerical simulations of gas dispersion, fire development and gas explosions).
